Volvo Safety

We are committed to making driving easier and safer. Our vision is that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020. Today, our IntelliSafe technologies support you while driving, helping to prevent accidents and protecting you if one occurs.

Safer, more comfortable driving

Bird’s-eye view

Staying alert

Every journey is effortless with Adaptive Cruise Control, which automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front. At speeds below 50 km/h our Pilot Assist technology works alongside this to help you stay in lane with gentle steering inputs.

With 360° Surround View technology you get a bird’s-eye view of your car and its surroundings so you can see obstacles all around you. It makes parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces simple.

If you are getting drowsy or inattentive at the wheel, Driver Alert Control will alert you and prompt you to take a break. The Rest Stop Guidance function can even tell you where it’s safe to stop.

Lighting the way ahead

Confident lane changing

Keeping you on track

To give you the best view, Active High Beam Control allows you to drive with high beam on all the time, without dazzling others. It detects road users ahead of you and automatically shades the part of the high beam that would dazzle them. You get optimal light and safety is improved for everyone.

You can change lanes with the confidence that it’s safe to do so with our Blind Spot Information System. It uses radar sensors to alert you to traffic around the vehicle.

To keep your car safely on course, our Lane Keeping Aid senses if you start to leave your lane unintentionally and gently steers you back on track.

Your co-pilot on the road

Think of City Safety as a co-pilot that’s always
looking out for you – detecting danger ahead,
warning you and preparing the brakes for a quick
response. If a collision is imminent it will brake
automatically, making a collision less likely or
reducing its impact.

Protecting pedestrians

Helping you protect cyclists

Helping you turn safely

Our City Safety technology detects pedestrians on the road ahead, whether they are stationary or moving into your path. If you don’t respond to a warning your Volvo will brake for you, which can lessen – or avoid – an impact.

If a cyclist swerves in front of your car, our cyclist detection technology issues a warning and will brake for you if a rapid response is necessary.

Our world-first intersection braking technology makes one of the most common – and damaging – types of collision less likely to happen. If you are about to turn into the path of an oncoming car, it detects if a collision is imminent, braking for you to reduce the severity of an impact, or avoid it altogether.

Prepared for the unexpected

Unpredictable things happen on the road, so we have
created features to keep you as safe as possible.

Soft landing

Protection in any situation

The three-point safety belt

Safer journeys for children

Our cars protect those outside as well as inside the vehicle. The Pedestrian Airbag – a Volvo-first technology – automatically inflates on impact to cover the windscreen and lessen any injuries.

Our latest world-first safety belt technology protects you should your car leave the road – a common and dangerous accident. To keep you firmly strapped in, the system’s electrically retractable safety belts tighten. And to prevent your spine being compressed in a rough landing, a unique seat structure absorbs vertical loads.

We gave the world the three-point safety belt in 1959 – it’s saved countless lives and has been voted one of mankind’s most important inventions. We are always innovating, and now we offer safety belts that automatically tighten within a few thousandths of a second after a collision.

We will never stop working to improve safety for everyone in our cars. To provide better protection for children we developed the world’s first rear-facing child seat, and in 2015 we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of one of our most important safety innovations – the integrated booster cushion.
